Amazing Grinder For The Price

Finally the prices of decent espresso capable grinders has come down, and us budget restricted enthusiasts all benefit. I came to Coffeeaddicts wanting the DF54, but it seemed nobody in Canada had stock yet. The great staff here made it worth my while to upgrade to the DF64 and instead of waiting indefinitely I had my grinder that very day. I'm so glad I pushed my budget and got the beefier model, although I'm sure the DF54 would've sufficed. I think the DF models in Canada (or maybe just from Coffeeaddicts) all come standard with DLC burrs which, by most accounts, is a nice upgrade from the base SS Italmill. In other parts of the world DLC is a paid upgrade.

And being local just gives me so much confidence buying my equipment from Coffeeaddicts. If there's any issues, I can just run my machine into them instead of having to pack and ship anywhere. As long as it's not Breville, that is. I'm told they can't work on Breville machines yet.

Great people to deal with!

Not perfect, but excellent value

I've only had my DF64 gen 2 (with DLC burrs) for a little over a week, but I've put it though 3 different roasts and many/many espressos, so I feel I can comment.

I purchased this grinder as my existing, nearly 10yo semi-pro burr grinder was very annoying:
- poor dosing design
- produced a lot of mess
- stepless grind adjustment was very stiff and thus painful to tweak on a daily basis
- very hard to clean due to the difficulty of disassembly
Not to mention after 10years of daily use, I was going to need to buy a new set of burrs, so I was looking at spending money anyways.

Onto the D64. First the Pros:
- Excellent quality of construction
- Nice low-profile design (takes up a lot less of my counter-space than my old grinder)
- Really attractive, modern cosmetics
- Definitely satisfies the "minimize retention" goal
- Stepless grind adjustment is pleasurable (nice haptics) and effective
- Extremely nice doser design, really optimized for 58mm E61-style portafilters

Some Cons:
- Yes, it is quite loud when grinding (though quiet when out of beans)
- As another commenter noted, the aluminum dosing cup & collar seem to attract grounds, so are the source of some mess

I will say that it took my at least 5 or 6 attempts to even get a semi-good shot as the "user interface" and grind-tuning experience was just so different from my old grinder. I have struggled to get my shot times where I want them, and in particular my tamping technique (which after 10 years was on complete autopilot with my old grinder) needed work. Initially I got a lot of "sloppy" pucks and almost choked shots, but the last day or so I've gotten much better results.

So, all-in-all, I would say the DF64 is an excellent product, right-priced, and will almost certainly be an upgrade for anyone who doesn't have a MUCH more expensive grinder.

Aside: I'd be interested in hearing about the benefits of the alternative burrs over the DLC burrs.

Love it

I've been very happy with the DF64 (gen2) grinder. It produces a nice consistent grind. After spending a little time finding a setting that I liked for espresso, I haven't changed anything, just dump in a dose of beans and hit the button.
